It is situated up the Trans-Canada Highway from Greater Victoria, which lies to the southeast. Downtown Victoria is located about 42 road kilometres away, around a 40 minute drive.
Mill Bay is a quiet community that features waterfront streets and amazing views of the Gulf Islands. There is also a great surrounding landscape perfect for cycling, hiking and enjoying the sunshine. It is also home to a small BC Ferries terminal which runs regularly scheduled trips to and from Brentwood Bay offering residents and visitors an alternative route from Mill Bay to Victoria or to the Swartz Bay terminal from Mill Bay when the Malahat is busy.

The Mill Bay real estate market is large in geographical size but is predominantly made up of forested area except for small pockets of residential along the Trans-Canada Highway. The south of the Mill Bay community includes solely single family residential dwellings especially near the highway. Homes for sale in Mill Bay generally reside on large lots on neighbourhood roads that are quiet. There are also a number of waterfront homes along the Saanich Inlet with convenient beach access.
Further north is the town center and the Mill Bay Shopping Centre which provides residents with a number of large retail options. Beside this is the Brentwood College School which is a large renowned private school.

Golfers will also love Mill Bay with numerous golf clubs in the area including the Cowichan, Duncan Meadows, Mount Brenton, and Arbutus Ridge Golf Club.
Wineries are also very common and popular in the area with a wine route beginning in Mill Bay at the Merridale Estate Cidery and traversing through Cowichan Bay and Cobble Hill at the Cherry Point Vineyards.
Further south is also the region's newest attraction, the Malahat Skywalk which is an accessible 600 m tree walk through the forest to a spiral ramp that takes you up 32 m to a stunning sightseeing lookout that provides views of the Saanich Peninsula, Mount Baker and the distant Coastal Mountains.
